"A movement to take power public"
The cost of electricity is up 6.9% year-over-year, far outpacing inflation. Part of the reason for that, writes James Baratta in The American Prospect, is that 70% of the utilities Americans rely on are investor-owned, meaning they have an obligation not just to the people they provide services to, but also to shareholders.

Green Cities, Green Deals
In 2019, the City of Ithaca approved its very own Green New Deal — making it one of the first US cities to initiate an infrastructural transformation toward renewable energy and decarbonization. Ithaca will serve as a road map for more than 150 municipalities statewide. With the help of private equity, the local government has acquired roughly $100 million in investments to kickstart Ithaca's Green New Deal.

The Ithaca College Drone Squadron seeks to educate Ithaca College students about drone flying while giving them hands-on experience with drones. They also hold workshops for those looking to get licensed.

The Adjunctification Crisis
Adjunctification—the reliance of colleges and universities on faculty who lack access to professional development opportunities, health insurance, fair wages and benefits—is happening at colleges and universities nationwide.
This trend has resulted in the creation of a de facto underclass of educators in academia.
What are the implications of this structural dilemma for academics working in higher education?

Cornell University and Ithaca College Consider Fossil Fuel Divestment
For years, divestment advocates have been calling upon Ithaca’s premier institutions—Cornell University and Ithaca College—to withdraw endowment investments in the oil and gas industry. And while there has been ample progress on this front, these institutions have yet to fully divest from fossil fuels.
The three biggest stakeholders in the area—Cornell, IC and the City of Ithaca—have demonstrated that they are working toward a sustainable future. Nevertheless, divestment advocates might argue that they need to move faster.

Ithaca College’s APP Language Illuminates 'Foundational Flaws'
“Support,” “community” and “together” were just some of the words that appeared in Ithaca College’s official statements regarding the Academic Program Prioritization (APP) process, which entered its second phase earlier this month.
Community members have criticized the Senior Leadership Team (SLT)— the College’s administrative body—for its linguistic appropriation of institutional values. Members of the Open the Books Coalition, Ithaca College’s alliance of faculty, staff, students and alumni, argue that the administration has employed language that misrepresents the true social cost of the APP, and creates a reality that differs from the lived experiences of stakeholders.

Indie Media at Ithaca College Face Production Cycle Setback
Buzzsaw Magazine is an on-campus publication at Ithaca College whose goal is to publish original creative journalism, commentary and satire that works to deconstruct society, pop culture, politics, college life and dominant Western beliefs. Due to a proposed bill by the college's Student Governance Council (SGC), indie media was unable to print and distribute magazines around campus in accordance with their respective production cycles.
